The Canon 24mm 2.8 is a sharp lens and is a great lens for the money. I just purchased this lens recently and I did not regret it. Being a prime lens, this lens is simply sharper than the Canon 17-35mm lens at the same focal length. In fact, I like the contrast that this lens gives compared to the Canon 17-35mm lens. This lens simply gives better color rendition as well as better center sharpness.
There are some problems with this lens though. I used this lens with the Canon D60 DSLR camera and it somewhat tends to overexpose.
